Large Cavitation tunnel
The basic design and preliminary construction drawing of this facility is performed by SSPA and modified by NTOU and SOIC (Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center) respectively. The construction of this facility is finished by CSBC (China Shipbuilding Company) on April 2002. This cavitation tunnel is made of SUS 316L stainless steel. The steel structure is about 18m in height, 49m in length, total dry weight is about 470 tons.

The test section has the following characteristics.
Size : 10.0 meter in length, 2.60 meter in breadth and 1.50 meter in height.
The maximal test speed is up to 12.15m/s at 86% output of the main motor.
The maximal allowable working pressure at the center line of test section is 240kPa, and minimal is 28kPa.
The power of the main driven motor is 1400kw. Stator with nine blades. Impeller with seven blades.
An anechoic acoustic chamber has the following characteristics.
Size : 8.2 m in length, 2.2m in breadth and 1.77m in height.
It is located beneath the test section.
An underwater microphone is installed in the acoustic chamber to measure the intensity and frequency of the sound produced by the experimental.

The main function of the tunnel.
Due to the characteristics of both quietness and large size, the main function of this tunnel is to carry out the research and development of underwater fluid dynamics and noise.
- Research on fluid dynamics and underwater noise of submarines or various high-speed underwater vehicles.
- Research on hull excitation force and underwater noise of surface ship propeller.
- Ship type development and propeller excitation force measurement for high value-added ships.
- Flow field measurement, cavitation observation, and underwater noise measurement of various vehicles.
